Folding Tonneau Covers

Folding tonneau covers are fairly new to the truck bed cover market and (most) of them offer the security and convenience of a hard tonneau cover, with the simple bed access similar to roll up covers or retractable tonneau covers.

Folding covers are sometimes called “tri-fold covers”, but with some manufacturers offering models with more than 3 panels, that term isn’t used as much any longer.

These covers usually have panels that fold up toward the front of your truck bed, but some also offer the ability to fold toward the rear of your bed.

The panels are usually made of a lighter weight material like an aluminum composite (layered) or fiberglass or plastic. Some manufacturers offer the panels in a vinyl, so they aren’t going to offer the same security as the hard panels, but they are also much less expensive.

Folding covers are fairly easy to operate and most models allow you to secure your cover at different points in your truck bed. In other words, if you only need a little bit of access to your truck bed, you don’t need to completely open your folding cover, you can just open as many panels as you need and secure them as per the manufacturers instructions.

Some folding covers have an extra benefit of allowing you to use the panels as a type of a bench for relaxing in your truck bed and getting a good view watching outdoor activities or going to tailgate parties.

The entry level folding cover is the Ionic brand folding cover and it offers the benefit of ‘out of site-out of mind’. It doesn’t offer the security of the hard folding covers, but it’s ease of use and simple installation makes it the best value folding cover.

Advantage offers four different styles (models), two of them, the Torza Top and the Torza Top Premier have soft panels, while the Hard Hat and the Hard Hat Premier have hard panels that offer greater security.

BAK also offers four different models, the BAKFlip F1, the BAKFlip G2, the BAKFlip HD and the BAKFlip CS. All four models of the BAKFlip feature hard panels for excellent security.

Extang offers two models and the model with soft panels is the Extang Trifecta. If you are looking for greater security, the Extang Solid Fold features hard aluminum panels for strength, as well as security.
