The Ford F-series trucks have been some of the best selling trucks on the market for many years. They were the first truck manufacturer to offer the black plastic bed rail caps that are quite common on newer truck today.

Ford was also one of the first truck manufacturers to offer a shorter ‘short bed’. It used to be that ‘short bed’ meant a truck bed length that was less than 8 feet. This usually meant the 6 foot 6 inch bed. But, in 2001, Ford introduced the Ford F-150 Supercrew, and many manufacturers followed.  The first generation of the newer shorter short box had ‘pillars’ at the rear. This sometimes interfered with the clamps of some tonneau covers, but over time, the manufacturers adapted to it.

Note that in 2010, Ford added ‘length’ to the tailgate with their new tailgate. This doesn’t affect covers that don’t wrap over the rails of the truck bed, but it does effect the wrap-over tonneau covers from earlier years. In other words, one cannot use a cover for a Ford F-150 from earlier years and expect it to work with your new F-150.
