Redesigned in 2005, the little brother of the Toyota Tundra is the Toyota Tacoma.
One of the unique features of the Toyota Tacoma is the composite bed. This simply means the bed of the Toyota Tacoma is not really made of metal, but it is made of a composite material (a type of a plastic.) Another interesting feature of the Toyota Tacoma is that Toyota’s ‘deck-rail system’ is standard on the Tacoma. This is a fantastic and innovative feature for cargo management. All tonneau cover manufacturers make their tonneau covers to work with this standard feature.
One of the different features of the Toyota Tacoma, though, is the tailgate (as well as the front rail).
The tailgate of the newer Tacoma’s is about 5/8” lower than the rest of the side rails. This was clearly an issue for tonneau cover manufacturers, for this lower tailgate would be a potential security issue, as well as a potential area where the cover might be prone to leak. The front rail is also a little lower, but not as much as the tailgate. Again, over time, all tonneau cover manufacturers have managed to fill these ‘gaps’. (So, no worries about leaking!)
